ABOUT ME

My name is Elle Wagstaffe and I am currently a master’s student at the University of the West of Scotland, due to graduate in August 2020. I have a background in audio work including working on  video trailers, recording and editing foley effects, podcasting, and music recording. My artistic style involves recording every day sounds and turning these into either sound effects for a video/audio piece or edit these in such a way to create music for an upcoming promotional trailer.

Since moving forward throughout my postgraduate degree I have decided to take my sound design skills further and create stylistic ‘art’ to show that within any medium you can feel emotion from the sound, whether the music reminds you of a certain memory or think a certain way towards the piece. To me, good sound is important because it informs us and moves us in ways visuals cannot, and because certain combinations of sound and visuals can evoke what neither can do alone. It is also potentially important because it can help to determine what we see.

Going back to the website that I have created to put out digitally, I ask myself, how can social media help me put out my website? And furthermore, how can social media help me when I create my audio work? “Social Media websites are among the most frequently visited websites on the internet” (Rutledge, 2008).   When it comes to targeting that specific audience, I do not intend to look for a specific type. The right audience will come to me. Instead of wasting time trying to network I believe it is best to take advantages of the network. Share ideas, work with others in the same creative field but keeping your creative individuality.  I recently read a book on Aesthetic Anxieties wrote that when creating art “…the importance of these images is for their power to make accessible stories for those not to read but to feel…to spark emotion” (Kessler, 2011).  I have  plans for the future to create more audio involved pieces as there are no boundaries for art whatever the style. It is about being creative and using your unique selling point.
